WAAFS

The Women's Auxiliary Air Force was established in the summer of 1939 for duty with the RAF during World War 2. By the end of the war a quarter of a million women had served in the WAAF. They came from all walks of life and although initially treated with scepticism and humour at the start of the war this soon turned to respect and admiration as they proved time after time how diligent, tireless and brave they were.

Our WAAFs depict some of the many roles the service women were completing on a daily basis. This included mechanics, electricians, radar control, photo interpretation Ops Room plotters, Barrage Balloon crews, ciphers, meterology and not to mention the female Air Transport Auxiliary who delivered aircraft as civilians.Â
